Spanish, or Vanish.

To dump down Gareth Bale’s legacy at Real Madrid, would be a grave injustice. For all we know, he’s the same guy who scored the winner in the most important final his team had played in a decade. 102 goals, 65 assists, a La Liga and 4 Champions Leagues in 6 years. Insane numbers. Yet, the only laurel Gareth has received for his contribution to the Whites, is constant criticism by the Spanish media. Sidelined and underappreciated for the bulk of the time he has spent in the Spanish capital, is perhaps not what a player of his calibre deserves. Which Madrid fan will ever be able to forget that run down the left flank, running past the touchline and back in, to nutmeg Victor Valdes, in what is arguably the best ever Copa Del Rey goal I’ve seen? From Lisbon to Kiev, whenever Madrid needed a hero, he was there. Undisputed. Unparalleled. So many memorable moments, such illustrious numbers yet, we’re found asking ourselves, ‘Where did it all go wrong for him?’

Injuries have marred his career, big time. Circumstances have added to it. But, today, as we stand on the verge of Gareth Bale’s move away from Real Madrid, I have to question his attitude and commitment. The media have come out in numbers, questioning Zidane’s stance on the Gareth Bale situation. I have a question at this stage. Was Gareth Bale and his agent justified when they arrogantly went around stating that Bale would rather stay at Madrid and play golf and earn the 17M included in his contract rather than moving away?

In 6 years, he has stubbornly refused to even make attempts at learning spanish. If one’s not willing to, no one can make him blend in. And, I believe it’s time Bale leaves on a high, his legacy intact, rather than stay at Los Blancos amidst the whistles of the Bernabeu crowd, clouding over his professional career.

With that being said, Gareth Bale will go down as one of the very best to don the white of Los Blancos.

Your dues, irreversible.
Your legacy, indelible.

Thank you, Gareth.
